Before the development of explosive bombs, British and German biplanes rained flechettes (French for “little arrow”) down upon each other’s trench bound infantry. The 1-4 inch projectiles were designed in a variety of deadly streamlined shapes to attain a terminal velocity of 200 mph capable of piercing helmets and vital organs.
